Imago Mundi - Luciano Benetton Collection
Texts by Luciano Benetton, Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, Tony Bechara, Sasha Dees
A collective story of contemporary Caribbean art through the work of a group of artists from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and Curaçao, including a number of Caribbean artists living in New York. A look at the creativity - irrepressible, charming, sometimes even harsh, but always sincere – of a part of our world that has always attracted the great masters of colour. The 200 small paintings in this new Imago Mundi collection reflect the crucible of stories, languages, faiths, political currents, nationalities and cultures that permeate the local identity of the Caribbean: Asian, Mediterranean, European, African. A visual mix that shatters the myth of the happy islands and takes us on a surprising journey through the visual evolution of these islands, now bathed in the currents of modernity.
Caribbean: Together Apart is an Imago Mundi collection, a cultural, democratic, global, non-profit project, promoted by Luciano Benetton with the aim of creating the widest possible mapping of the different contemporary artistic experiences of our world. In Imago Mundi, each country is represented by the works of established artists and new talents, commissioned with the maximum freedom of expression, whose only constraint is the 10x12cm format.
